Selling Overseas

International Auction-Grade Automotive Photography

For collectors preparing a significant valuable vintage, race car or other historical automobiles for international sale, presentation is not simply marketing – it is a valuation strategy. Tim Salix’s automotive photography is tailored specifically for New Zealand vehicles destined for overseas prestige auctions. With extensive experience designing substantial continuous LED lighting installations and managing controlled onsite or studio environments, he produces imagery that meets the expectations of global collector markets.

Having photographed rare and investment-grade automobiles for RM Sotheby’s, Tim understands the documentation standards, visual precision and catalogue consistency required by leading international auction houses. The objective is twofold: elevate desirability while transparently representing condition. When a vehicle is being considered for consignment abroad, photography must withstand scrutiny from international specialists, catalogue editors, bidding clients and marque experts. It is no longer simply about attractive images – it is about credibility.

The 1965 McLaren-Elva Mark 1A was the first production racing car to carry the name of New Zealand driver and engineer Bruce McLaren. Lightweight and purpose-built for sports-car competition, the Mark 1A helped establish McLaren’s reputation as both a constructor and innovator in international motorsport. This particular example was restored in Auckland, photographed by Tim Salix and later shipped to the United States for sale through the auction house RM Sotheby’s, where it was presented to the international collector car market.

Expect between 125 and 250 images, depending on the automobile, the auction house photography guidelines and the available budget

This level of documentation ensures the vehicle is ready for overseas consignment submission without requiring reshoots or supplementary photos. For vehicles being shipped to an overseas auction, professional imagery is still required well in advance. This enables the auction house to produce printed catalogues and commence pre-sale promotion before the vehicle’s arrival. Below is a sample selection of images representative of those supplied following a professional photography shoot.

Other overseas online auction or classifieds platforms specialising in less valuable RH-Drive classic, sports and collector vehicles – including Car & Classic, Collecting Cars, Trade Classics or Classic Trader – still demand comprehensive photographic documentation. Even at more accessible price points, detailed, high-resolution imagery remains essential to transparently evidence condition, substantiate value and give remote bidders the
confidence to transact.

Investment-Focused Presentation

The international collector market is sophisticated and forensic. Buyers in Europe, United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Australia and North America often commit substantial capital without physically viewing the vehicle. Their confidence is formed through the reputation of the auction house and the detail of the photography of the vehicle.
  • Professional auction-standard imagery:
  • Enhances perceived value
  • Reduces buyer hesitation
  • Supports stronger hammer prices
  • Reinforces provenance and authenticity
  • Positions the vehicle alongside global inventory of equivalent calibre
For New Zealand based owners exporting rare high-value collectable automobiles or historically significant race cars, photography must bridge geography. It has to speak to buyers thousands of kilometres away with the same authority as an in-person inspection. Tim’s approach combines aesthetic refinement with documentary integrity – ensuring the vehicle is presented not merely as a car for sale, but as an asset class.
